Interior minister: CSF officer wanted for murder still on run Interior minister says CSF first lieutenant accused of firing on unarmed protesters is still on the lam, predicts his arrest 'sooner or later'
Interior minister Mansour El-Eissawy has said that Mohamed Sobhy El-Shennawy, a first lieutenant in the ministry's Central Security Forces (CSF) who faces charges of shooting unarmed protesters in last week's Cairo clashes, was currently on the run from authorities. Speaking on the popular “Cairo Tonight” television talk show on Monday night, El-Eissawy stated that the CSF officer would be arrested “sooner or later.” The former minister went on to say that El-Shennawy was currently in contact with his CSF commanders, who had advised him to surrender. The fugitive's current whereabouts, El-Eissawy added, remain unknown. El-Shennawy gained notoriety last week after the appearance online of a video clip showing him shooting at protesters – as CSF soldiers cheered him on – during last week's clashes. The violent confrontations, which went on for five days, ultimately left more than 40 protesters dead countrywide. On Wednesday, general prosecutors officially launched an investigation of El-Shannawy and ordered his arrest. Protesters in Tahrir Square, meanwhile, have sprayed graffiti and drawn posters attacking the CSF officer and demanding his arrest “dead or alive.”
