Cairo's Gallery Misr will hold a retrospective exhibition for the late Egyptian artist Gamil Shafik, opening on 15 October. Shafik was born in Tanta in 1938 and died last year, leaving behind an oeuvre of ink paintings, sculptures and illustrations for the press. He graduated from the Helwan Faculty of Fine Arts in 1962 with a specialization in painting. He is known for his monochromatic ink works in very fine lines or pointillism. His sculptures made of driftwood convey movement and have a light, whimsical air to them. Shafik was the winner of the Jury prize for drawing at the 1994 Alexandria Biennale. His work was displayed in solo exhibitions in Egypt, at Picasso Gallery and Gallery Misr, as well as internationally, including in Beirut, Norway and the United States. Shafik was a member of the Association of Egyptian Artists and the Cairo Atelier for Writers and Artists.
