Arabs give Syria a day to accept monitors A days deadline given to Syria to sign an agreement over a delegation of monitors to visit Syria, or else a new set of sanctions are to be enacted, after Syrian official stalls on the approval
The Arab League has given Syria a day to sign a protocol allowing monitors into the country or the regional body will press ahead with plans to impose economic sanctions, Egypt's envoy to the League said on Thursday. Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Makdad was in Cairo Thursday to sign the protocol. The meeting was however abruptly concluded without a press conference, after al-Makdad stated he would need to review the protocol with officials in Syria first. The Syrian government held reservations about the protocol early this week, with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Al-Muallem raising questions about violating the country's sovereignty as a result of the mission's “pervasive jurisdiction.” The sanctions could include a suspension of commercial flights to Syria and a halt to dealings with its central bank, the envoy, Afifi Abdel Wahab, told reporters in Cairo. "Tomorrow is the deadline for Syria to sign. If they don't sign, the economic and social council (of ministers) will meet on Saturday to discuss economic sanctions," he said adding that if Syria did not sign foreign ministers would meet again on Sunday to review the proposed sanctions.
