Club Africain claim narrow first-leg advantage in Confederation Cup final Club Africain beat 10-man Maghreb Fez 1-0 in the first-leg of the Confederation Cup final
Tunisia's Club Africain claimed a narrow first-leg advantage after beating Morocco's Maghreb Fez, who played with ten men for most of the second half, 1-0 in the Confederation Cup final on Saturday. Cameroonian forward Alexis Mendemo scored what proved to be the winner after eight minutes, capitalizing on a poor defensive clearance to fire a powerful right-foot volley which beat the keeper at the near post. Africain failed to double their lead despite the 59th-minute dismissal of Fez's defender Samir Zekroumi to take a slender advantage ahead of the second leg, which will take place in Morocco on 4 December. The Tunisians are hoping to follow in the footsteps of compatriots Esperance, who won the African Champions League earlier this month after beating Morocco's Wydad Casablanca 1-0 on aggregate. Zouheir Dhaouadi almost put Africain two up in the 29th minute but he was unlucky to see his free kick strike the post. Despite their numerical disadvantage, Fez launched some dangerous counter attacks after the break after displaying smooth football but they failed to score a decisive equalizer.
