Cairo's El-Geneina Theater is set to host a series of Ramadan concerts titled Hayy, beginning Sunday 4 June with Libyan musician Nasser El-Mezdawi and Egyptian instrumental band Dokkan. Famous for combining Berber, Arab, African and European music, Libyan musician El-Mizdawi rose to popularity in the 1970s, with his first album Oghniyat Al Ghurba (1975). He has since released three other albums, Angham Libya (1983), Raja'a (1997), and Wahdani (2000). The artist also greatly influenced the Arab music scene, composing songs for many a prominent figure such as Amr Diab and Hamid El Shaary. Dokkan are among the few exclusively instrumental bands in Egypt. Founded in 2015, the band fuses traditional Egyptian music with contemporary tunes and are currently in the process of recording their first album. Other acts taking part in the series, which runs 4 to 14 June, include Algerian singer and composer Sidi Bemole, Egyptian singer Shahira Kamal and her band, and Moroccan singer Malika Zarra.
