SCAF approves overhaul of much-hated Supreme Council of the Press
Egypt's ruling military council has approved the new board of the Supreme Council of the Press, submitted by the Cabinet

A new board of the Supreme Council of the Press will be headed by the speaker of the Shura Council — the upper house of the Egyptian parliament — withmembership for the heads of state-owned newspapers and press institutions, “MENA, Al-Ahram, Akhbar Al-Youm , Dar Al-Tahrir, Dar Al-Halel, Rosa Al-Youssef, Dar El-Marf and the National Company for Distribution.”
The council will also include representatives from the Journalists' Syndicate, including the newly-elected chairman, Mamdouh El-Wally, as well representatives from workers in journalism, printing, publishing and media syndication.
The Supreme Council of the Press will include the editor-in-chiefs of partisan newspapers as well as Egyptian university professors, prominent Egyptian personalities, and lawmakers.
The council was founded in the time of ousted president Hosni Mubarak and was headed by former speaker of the Shura Council Safwat El-Sherif.The council was widely regarded as a tool of oppression against press freedom, supervising press issues in the country and controlling licenses to publish.
There have been calls for the council to be abolished after the ouster of Mubarak and imprisonment of El-Sherif.
