Egyptian Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Mahmoud Hegazy met with Libya's General Khalifa Haftar in Cairo on Friday to discuss latest developments in the conflict-hit country. The two men discussed the results of meetings in Cairo between Egyptian officials and different Libyan powers and groups, state agency MENA reported. Haftar, a commander in the Libyan National Army, stressed the importance of the Egyptian role in supporting the unity of Libya, MENA reported. He also welcomed Libyan political efforts to end the crisis. Haftar had arrived in Cairo on Thursday. Egypt has been playing an active role in seeking to find a solution to the civil war in Libya. In December, Libyan officials and representatives of the country's different political factions met in Cairo and agreed to a declaration of principles, which includes five proposed amendments to the UN-brokered Skhirat agreement of 2015. Last week Hegazy met with the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, Martin Kobler, to discuss how to achieve a consensus between the various rival factions in Libya in accordance with the Skhirat agreement. In the same week, Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi discussed the latest developments in Libya with the chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Fayaz Al-Sarraj, at a meeting in Cairo.
