Art Alert: Egyptian singer Fayrouz Karawya to bring new project to Cairo's Osiris
Published in Ahram Online on 11 - 01 - 2017

Egyptian singer, songwriter and record producer Fayrouz Karawya will bring her new project 'Mazagang' to Cairo's Osiris on Friday 20 January.
Karawya will be joined on stage by her band which comprises music producer Loay Ismail on guitar and keyboard, composer Wajdy Elfiwy on oud and keyboard, Ziad Hisham on guitar, in addition to sound engineer Taher Saleh and videographer and artistic director Faten Elbendarie.
According to the event description, Mazagang is a music project that sees Karawya revisit songs from her own repertoire, aided by the musicianship of composer Loay Ismail. Together, the duo introduces a fresh electronic sound to a selection of Karawya's releases over the years.
Born in the Egyptian coastal city of Port Said, Karawya made her debut in 2001 when she performed a song in Asrar Al-Banat (Girl's Secrets), a film by Egyptian director Magdy Ahmed Ali.
In 2007, Karawya founded her own band and together they delivered a number of concerts across the Egyptian capital, bringing a mishmash of Egyptian Sha'abi, folk, oriental, jazz and world music to the Egyptian audience.
That year, Karawya was one of three finalists in the Monte-Carlo Doualiya Prize in the Middle East, held in Amman, Jordan.
In 2011, she received The Young Arab Creators Grant by The Culture Resource (Al Mawred Al Thaqafy).
Karawya's repertoire comprises her debut album Barra Menny (Outside of Me, 2012); the mini-album Geninet El Insan (The garden of a Human, 2013) in which she experimented with Sufi music; Eskimo (2014), a music project that saw Karawya fuse electronic music with Arabic lyrics, and most recently an album titled Albak Zeham (Crowded Heart, 2015).
Karawya thinks of her musical philosophy as a quest to “dig deep into the essence of love and emotion, to shed light on untapped potentials, unspoken lines, the fragility of captured small moments and the beauty of being there.”
Programme:

Friday 20 January, 7pm

Osiris, Seif El-Din building #1, Hassan Morad St, off Kasr El-Einy St, Garden City, Cairo
