South Africa went top of Group D in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers after claiming a convincing 2-1 home victory over Senegal in their second game on Saturday. Hosts South Africa went to the locker room with a 2-0 lead over their fancied opponents, having scored in the last five minutes of the first half through goals from Bidvest Wits' defender Thulani Hlatshwayo (penalty) and Ajax Amsterdam attacking midfielder Thulani Serero. Senegal midfielder Cheikh Ndoye scored the only goal for the visitors in the 75th minute as South Africa held on for a precious win. The Bafana Bafana are leading the group with four points, one ahead of second-placed Senegal. Burkina Faso, who lie third with one point, will face bottom side Cape Verde (0 points) later on Saturday. Elsewhere, Uganda, who surprisingly held Ghana to a 0-0 away draw in their opening game, moved top in Group E after beating Congo 1-0 at home. Uganda have four points but Egypt (three points) will overtake them at the summit if they beat Ghana in a vital qualifier on Sunday.
