Jordan's prime minister-designate says municipal elections planned by his predecessor for Dec. 27 have been postponed. Awn al-Khasawneh said Wednesday there are many glitches in a municipal election law drafted by former Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit, who resigned Monday. The law sparked violent protests last week that saw dozens of masked Bedouin tribesmen block highways. The protesters accused al-Bakhit of intentionally including vague clauses in the law that would deprive them of self-rule and allow for vote tampering. Al-Khasawneh told lawmakers Wednesday that he will propose a new municipal election law and the polls planned for late December will be held later. The meeting was to consult parliament on the makeup of his Cabinet, which he is expected to form soon.
