The Egypt branch of the Dubai-based Careem car booking service announced on Tuesday that it is inviting Cairo's traditional white taxis to utilise the service to pick up customers by using the company's mobile application. Cairo's taxi drivers held several protests in early 2016 against the Careem and Uber ride booking services, demanding that they be banned, though the services are still operating in the city. The official Careem Facebook page states that taxis will be able to join the service after the Eid holiday, which starts on 11 September and lasts for five days. It is unclear whether customers will pay the fare according to the taxis' built-in metres or will use Careem's standard payment method.
