VIDEO: Meteb gives Ahly dour win in league opener
Despite a poor performance, Ahly make off with the three points following a 1-0 victory over Haras El-Hodoud in their Egyptian Premier League opener on Friday

A second-half header from Emad Meteb gave defending champions Ahly a dour 1-0 win over Haras El-Hodoud in their Egyptian Premier League opener on Friday.
The Egypt striker notched the winner six minutes past the hour mark as Ahly's expensively-assembled side, who are seeking to win an eighth successive league title, avoided a disappointment on the opening day of the season.
The match, which was supposed to take place in Cairo, was held in Alexandria after Ahly were sanctioned by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) for crowd troubles during a low-key Egypt Cup game against Kima Aswan last month.
Ahly coach Manuel Jose included new signings Abdallah El-Saied, Walid Soliman and Brazilian striker Fabio Junior in the team's starting line up after being criticized for not making use of them during the recent Egypt Cup and CAF Champions League exits.
They dominated possession in the first half but their fast-paced football failed to materialize, with the Red Devils struggling to break down a resolute El-Hodoud defence. Meteb was guilty of spurning the two opportunities Ahly managed to create before the break.
He blasted his shot over the bar after a pull-back from Junior on 11 minutes before wasting another golden goal-scoring chance two minutes before the interval.
An attempted defensive clearance from El-Hodoud found the darting Meteb, who broke clear but his poor shot was blocked by advancing keeper Ali Farag.
He made amends on 66 minutes to end the resistance of El-Hodoud, whose over-reliance on defence eventually cost them.
Meteb beat his marker to a superb cross from left-back Sayed Moawad at the near post to send a powerful header past Farag as wild celebrations broke out in the stadium, with Ahly fans lighting fireworks which could prompt the EFA to punish the club again.
El-Hodoud, lacking any spark or creativity, tried to mount pressure in the latter stages but failed to threaten Ahly keeper Sherif Ekramy.
