Art Alert: What Happened, Miss Simone? screens at Cairo's Magnolia

What Happened, Miss Simone? a documentary film about the legendary American singer Nina Simone, will screen at Magnolia Leaves of Art on 6 August.
Directed by Liz Garbus, the film presents “never-before-heard recordings, rare archival footage and her best-known songs”, according to Magnolia's description.
Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon, Simone's debut was the album Little Girl Blue in 1958, and she rose to fame with the hit I Loves You, Porgy.
Simone, a singer, songwriter, pianist and civil rights activist, went on to release over 40 albums between the late 50s and mid 70s, working with many different styles including classical, jazz, blues, folk, R&B, gospel, and pop.
Taken from hours of autobiographical tapes, the film shows Simone's struggles living in 1960s America, the civil rights era.
The film was released in 2015 and is produced by Netflix. It stars James Baldwin, Stokely Carmichael, and Walter Cronkite.
It has won a Peabody award.
