International concert series at El Genaina Theatre 11-26 August
Between 11 and 26 August El Genaina Theatre in Al-Azhar park hosts a series of Hay Programme concerts with artists from Egypt, Spain, Tunisia, Algeria, Palestine and India

This year, the Hayy Programme, developed by Al Mawred Al Thaqafy (Culture Resource), will include artists from Egypt, Spain, Tunisia, Algeria, Palestine and India, bringing a scent of their musical backgrounds to El Genaina audiences. Influences of reggae, flamenco, jazz, blues and many other genres will be presented to the audiences through six consecutive evenings.

Thursday, 11 August
Ara Musa Honra – Spain
A Spanish singer who started in 2008 with her band to perform a wide range of music that includes pop, reggae and flamenco. Throughout the years she has received high acclaim, not only in Spain, but in most European countries, as well. Ara Musa is currently recording her first album. She has won prizes in many contests such as the third Trebufestival of musicians in Trebujena, Cádiz; second in the national local competition - Guadalajara, and in the contest Tres Aguas Pop Music.

Maryam Saleh - Egypt
An Egyptian independent singer, songwriter and actress raised by her father, the renowned theatre writer/director Saleh Saad. Maryam Saleh started singing and acting at the age of seven and later formed part of and founded several music groups and bands, including Sadah wa Mazbout, Gawaz Safar, Sheikh Zein, Habayebna, Al Warsha Theatre Company, AlTamye Theatre Group and Baraka. Maryam has also acted and starred in independent film productions and is working now on various new projects.

Badiaa Bouhrizi - Tunisia
Throughout Badiaa Bouhrizi's career, she has gone through different musical genres, including; jazz, rock and reggae, before creating her solo project, Neyssatou, which represents the original essence of the North African spirit. Bouhrizi writes and composes her own work, fusing and developing musical genres to create her own atmosphere and distinctive style, through combining classical and electronic music. Badiaa won the production award from Al Mawred Al Thakafy, 2011.

Karima Nayt – Algeria
Accompanied by Fathy Salama
Born in Algeria, Karima Nayet began her artistic career as a contemporary dancer. In 1998 she moved to Cairo, met Grammy Award winner, Fathy Salama and joined his group, Sharkiat.
In 2000 she recorded her first song, Jerusalem, continuing working with Fathy Salama on various projects. Karima was chosen in 2008 as one of the best voices in Cairo and has won a National Institute of Algeria prize.
Fathy Salama is a composer, music producer and pianist, internationally renowned for his numerous musical projects and tours. He composed all of the music for this concert, and is the first artist in the Arab world to win a Grammy Award and the BBC award, which he receive for his album called Egypt.

Nai Barghouti – Palestine
Nai Barghouti is a composer, singer and flute player, who began her musical study at the age of fourteen. Nai won the first prize in the Palestine National Competition of Music in 2006 and 2008, and ranked second in 2010. Nai has composed six musical pieces for the flute. In addition to playing the flute and composing Nai, has her own distinctive voice as a singer. Nai participated in a UNESCO 2008 ceremony and the 2010 Parisian Jazz Festival as part of the Maqamat Al Quds group.
The music material and training for this concert, Monyati, is supervised by the Palestinian musician, Khaled Jubran.

Susheela Raman - India / UK
Born in Britain in 1973 of Indian parents, Susheela started her career through south Indian classical music and then moved toward blues music. In 1995 Susheela went to India and learned from one of the greatest singers of India, Shruti Sadolikar. Susheela has released four albums so far: Salt Rain 2001, Love Trap 2003, Music for Crocodiles 2005 and finally 331 / 3 in 2007. Her debut album Salt Rain has been nominated for the British Mercury Prize.
