Egypt's press syndicate to file legal complaint against interior minister At least 43 journalists were arrested while covering protests on Monday, with seven still in jail
Egypt's press syndicate will file a complain with the prosecution against Interior Minister Magdy Abdel-Ghaffar in the wake of police violations against journalists covering protests on Monday, a syndicate statement read. The syndicate will also file a complaint against the head of Cairo's security directorate. Forty-three journalists were arrested on Monday while covering protests against a recent decision by Egypt to acknowledge Saudi Arabia's sovereignty over the two Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir. Most of the journalists were subequently released. The syndicate head, Yehia Qalash, said at an urgent board meeting on Tuesday that the syndicate would hold a press conference on Thursday at 12pm, along with some of the journalists who had been detained by the police during the protests. Following the press conference, the syndicate's board and the journalists will head to the prosecutor's office to file complaints. Khaled El-Balshy, the head of the syndicate's freedoms committee, told Ahram Online on Tuesday that 43 journalists had been arrested in total the previous day. Seven remain in detention on Tuesday. The syndicate's urgent meeting was also held to denounce President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's supporters' attempts to storm the syndicate building in central Cairo on Monday. Members of the syndicate reported that they were barred from entering the syndicate building, a planned focal point for the protests, as security forces had sealed off the surrounding streets to protesters. Freedom for the Brave, an Egyptian activist group tracking protester arrests, said that 239 people were arrested at demos on Monday nationwide. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/204487.aspx
