Migrants group evacuates more foreign workers from Tripoli The International Organization for Migration transfers 850 foreign workers from the Libyan capital to Egypt, as food and water shortages continue to plague the city
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says it has evacuated 850 stranded foreign workers from the Libyan capital Tripoli aboard a chartered ferry. The Geneva-based organization said Monday that the foreigners include women and children and are headed to the eastern port city of Benghazi, from which they will be transfered to Egypt and their home countries. IOM said the migrants are from Egypt, the Philippines, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Jordan, Iraq and Ukraine. An earlier IOM evacuation brought 263 stranded migrants out of Tripoli to escape the violence and widespread shortages of fuel, food, water and medical supplies. The organization said hundreds more migrants, especially from sub-Saharan Africa, fear they cannot safely reach embassies or the port area.
