Mata says Torres helped sway him on Chelsea move Chelsea signing Juanma Mata has given credit to Spain teammate Fernando Torres in helping sway him to join the English club
Mata says once the offer from Chelsea came, Torres “spoke with me and told me that playing abroad could be a very nice step for me.” Chelsea paid Valencia a reported 30 million British pounds($43 million) for the forward, who was a member of Spain's World Cup-winning squad with Torres, who joined the Blues from Liverpool in January. The 23-year-old Mata says he “never imagined himself leaving” but agreed to since the offer was too good for the Spanish club to pass up. Valencia, one of Spain's most heavily indebted clubs, has made approximately 145 million British pounds ($209 million) in transfers since 2009 and remained in Champions League play.
