Leading Egyptian Islamist praises 'positives' of ousted dictator Mubarak

A leading member of the conservative Islamist group, Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya, Nageh Ibrahim, believes that Egypt's revolutionaries should not ignore some of ousted president Mubarak's positive accomplishments.
Last night, Ibrahim, a member of Al-Gamaa's Shura Council (central committee) told Dream TV that, for example, Mubarak's former minister of interior, Habib El-Adly, improved conditions in prisons in a humane way and gracefully pardoned a number of Islamists during his tenure.
On a different note, Ibrahim said that he believes that Egypt needs to develop what he called “politics of consensus” in the coming period. Based on that, Ibrahim said that he rejects the idea that a Christian Egyptian could become speaker of any future parliament. Conversely, he also said that he is opposed to any an Islamist politician becoming president of the Republic.
During the 30 years of his rule, ousted president Mubarak jailed and tortured tens of thousands of Islamists from different groups, including Al-Gamaa Al-Islamiya, in a campaign to crackdown on Islamic fundamentalism.
Last month, Nageh's group, along with several Islamist groups organised mass rallies that drew hundreds of thousands across Egypt to call for the implementation of sharia law (Islamic law) in the country.
Now, former minister of interior Habib El-Adly and Mubarak are on trial for the murder of more than 1,000 peaceful protesters during the January uprising that toppled the former dictator. Both men could face the death penalty if convicted.
