The prosecution of Cairo's appeal court is investigating a proceeding filed by lawyer Mohamed El-Damaty against former first lady Suzanne Mubarak, accusing her of lying in official documents. El-Damatyreferredto an article published by Egyptian newspaper El-Osbooh (The Week), which said Suzanne bought a villa in Masr Al-Gedida (Heliopolis) in 2002 and listed herself in the deed as a single housewife, although she married Hosni Mubarak in 1958 and has never divorced. In May, Suzanne was supposed to be transported to prison after receiving a 15-day detention order on charges of abusing her political power to accrue illegal profits. However, she officially gave authority to the Illicit Profiteering Committee over a villa and two of her bank accounts to avoid imprisonment. In therelease issued in May 2011, by which she gave up the villa, she wrote that she is the wife of Egypt's ex-president, Hosni Mubarak, who was toppled on 11 February. Moreover, the contract enabled the original seller, a real estate company, to reclaim possession of the villa, which is deemed illegal, reported El-Damaty in his accusation. El-Damaty is one of the lawyers representing the families of the martyrs in the trial of deposed president Mubarak, who is indicted on charges of instigating the killing of peaceful protesters during the January 25 Revolution, which resulted in his overthrow. The 83-year-old is also accused of illegal profiteering.
