Mubarak does not deserve to be executed, says Egyptian tycoon Naguib Sawiris.
Sawiris, a founding member of the liberal Free Egyptians party, said that he does not believe that Mubarak gave the police orders to kill the protesters during the revolution.
In an interview with the Kuwaiti El Rai newspaper he claims to support the revolutionaries' call to put Mubarak on trial, but he disapproves of the manner in which the trial is being conducted. Sawiris said that he did not like seeing Mubarak in the suspects' dock on a hospital stretcher, stressing that his distaste of the spectacle is motivated by humanistic considerations; especially seeing as Mubarak was Egypt's president for 30 years.
However, Sawiris added, that it is important to try Mubarak for making wrong decisions in several situations, including running for office repeatedly at the end of each of his terms, grooming his younger son Gamal to take over power and for not leaving the country with his family when he had the chance.
Sawiris also talked about Egypt's future, saying that he believes that the most prominent presidential candidates are former Secretary-General of the Arab League, Amr Moussa and former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mohamed El Baradei. He also said that the Muslim Brotherhood (MB) do not represent the Egyptian people; instead, a ‘silent majority' makes them appear that they have more power than they actually do. He also added that the MB's Freedom and Justice Party, which was quickly established after Mubarak's fall was only a “procedural” move because the party and the MB are two faces of the same coin.
