In a celebration of the passing of 49 years since the Algerian Independence at the Egyptian Embassy in Algeria yesterday 26 July, the activist Djamila Bouhired, who was there with members of the National Liberation Front (FLN), said that the famous Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine cannot be replaced.
Chahine, whose death anniversary is today, made a film about Bouhired in 1958 with the Egyptian actress Magda playing her role.
Bouhired added that Magda managed to portray her character and her struggle against French colonialism well.
“I have sent a letter of condolences to his family upon his death expressing sorrow at the loss of such an important director,” Bouhired said.
Bouhired was born in 1935 in Algiers and was the only girl among seven boys. She joined the FLN in 1954 at the age of twenty.
She was one of the first volunteers to plant bombs in French settlements. When she got captured in 1957 after being hit by a bullet in her shoulder, she was sentenced to death. However, the sentence caused an uproar worldwide, and was thus reduced to a life-sentence. She was released upon Algeria's independence and married her French lawyer.
