The Revolution of LOL book release and film screenings at Egypt's CIC On Sunday 31 July, Contemporary Image Collective will host the book release of Thawret el Loool (Revolution of LOL) and young filmmaker screenings
In their announcement about a new book release, Contemporary Image Collective (CIC) states: “Thawret El Loool is a new, self-published bilingual book by Mariam Elias. It looks at the idea of ‘generations within arts and culture and asks whether any group of individuals/artists of the same age bracket form a ‘generation'.” It inspects the sociological and cultural context of the 1980s and 1990s in Egypt to find out whether a common, collective memory might result in the development of a particular visual language in the arts. A chronology at the end of the book gives a broad frame to this context. The book's title, Thawret El Loool, translates to the Revolution of LOL - yes: the Revolution of Laugh Out Loud, referring to the Facebook/chatting generation. The book also has five chat rooms where artists comment and share opinions or testimonials on several issues, such as: art education in Egypt, the effect of mass media and popular culture on their work, the public's perception of the visual arts, the art institution as a financer and exhibitor, DIY (do-it-yourself) culture, modern & contemporary art history and the concept of “generation” in general. The book is translated into Arabic by Ramez Farag. Artists featured in the book are: Aliaa Abo Ouf, Amr Ali, Amr Kafrawy, Ahmed El Azma, Wensh, Abdallah Sabry, Ahmed Sabry, Ahmed Nagy, Ahmed Badry Aly, Aya Tarek, Asmaa El Kolaly, Dalia Abdel Aziz, Dalia El Mahdy, Eslam Zien Elabdeen, Esraa El Feky, Gehad Anwar, George Azmy, Hind El Kolaly, Islam Hassan, Lamia Moghazy, Mai Hamdy, Magdi Mostafa, Mohamed Alaa, Mohamed Mansour, Mohamed Zayan, Mo Nabil, Mohamed Keshk, Nada Adel, Norhan Mohamed, SaraHamdy, Shereen Lotfey, Walaa El Sayed and Wessam Quresh. The book release will be accompanied by screenings of movies by young filmmakers.
