Possible presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Aboul-Fotouh critisised both the army and the minister of interior during an interview with TV host Motaaz El-Demerdash Monday night.
On the Egypt Today show, broadcast on Al Hayat, Aboul Fotouhexpressed his angerover the Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) holding a referendum on their official Facebook page asking people to vote for their favourite presidential candidate. Aboul Fotouh said that SCAF forced itself into the social arena. He also added that the army is too concerned with internal conflicts and is not paying enough attention to protecting the country's borders. Aboul Fotouh also sharply criticised the Minister of Interior Mansour El-Eissawi for failing to bring stability to the country.
Aboul-Fotouh, a former member of the Muslim Brotherhood, said that he is not the group's candidate, but insisted that Egyptian society is religious by nature. He alsoadded that the religious discourse in Egypt has become radical and provocative.
The presidential candidate was ousted from the organisation after he announced his intention to compete for the presidency, despite the MB's announcement that they will not field any candidates for the first post-Mubarak elections.
He also criticised circulating reports that Omar Suleiman, former vice president and chief of the Egyptian General Intelligence Service, may run for president. Aboul-Fotouh said that Suleiman was one of the pillars of the Mubarak regime and was actually the "second man" after Mubarak and must be held accountable for what he did.
When asked by Demerdash who hewould vote for in the upcoming presidential elections, Aboul-Fotouh was reluctant to respond. However, he said that his electoral program is directed towards all Egyptians and that the alienations of Copts goes against the Islamic faith.
