Ex-Real Madrid assistant coach Peseiro named Ahly manager Portuguese boss Jose Peseiro set to replace interim boss Abdel-Aziz 'Zizo' Abdel-Shafi right after the Egypt Super Cup clash with Ahly arch-rivals Zamalek
Ahly have appointed former Real Madrid assistant manager Jose Vitor dos Santos Peseiro as their new head coach, the club announced on their official website. Portuguese Peseiro, 55, is set to take charge of the team immediately after the Egypt Super Cup, when caretaker coach Abdel-Aziz "Zizo" Abdel-Shafi will lead the Reds against arch-rivals Zamalek. The length of the contract, however, was not disclosed by the Ahly website, with details set to be revealed when Pesseiro arrives within the coming few hours. Peseiro, who also managed Saudi Arabia in the 2010 World Cup finals, has been among several candidates to take the Ahly hot seat before the club came out to confirm that he will not be appointed manager following the dismissal of Fathi Mabrouk. Mabrouk, who replaced Juan Carlos Garrido in May after Ahly were dumped from the CAF Champions League last 16, was fired after last week's 5-3 aggregate defeat to the Orlando Pirates in the Confederation Cup semis. Apart from spells at Real Madrid and Saudi Arabia, where he was sacked following a loss to Syria in the Asia Cup in 2011, Peseiro also took charge of Saudi's Hilal, Panathinaikos, Sporting Braga and UAE's Al-Wehda. His most notable achievement, however, came in 2005 when he led Portuguese giants Sporting to the Europa League final before losing the title to CSKA Moscow.
