Olympic qualifiers: African heavyweights qualify for group stage No surprises in the 2012 Olympic Games qualifiers second-round as the African heavyweights book their place in the group stage
South Africa and Nigeria on Sunday joined fellow African heavyweights in the group stage of the 2012 Olympic Games qualifiers. Nigeria, winners of the gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games, overturned a 1-0 first-leg deficit to crush Tanzania 3-0 and progress to the next round. Ekigho Ehiosun opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute before Ganiyu Oseni doubled the lead 11 minutes after the restart. Ahmed Musa ensured victory with a stoppage-time goal. South Africa also atoned for their 3-1 first-leg defeat by Benin in style, thrashing them 5-1 via a brace from Bongani Ndulula and goals from Phumelele Bhengu, Thami Sangweni and Mandla Masango. On Saturday, Egypt, who made their last Olympic appearance in the 1992 Barcelona Games, went through after defeating Sudan 2-0 in Alexandria courtesy of two second-half goals from Ahmed Sherweida and Shehab Ahmed. The first leg ended goalless in Sudan. Ivory Coast defeated Congo 1-0, thanks to a goal from Bougouhi Jean-Jacques, to complete a 3-1 aggregate victory while Algeria qualified for the group stage despite losing 2-0 to Zambia, having beaten them 3-0 in the first leg. Senegal claimed a narrow 1-0 win over Tunisia through a second-half strike from Abdoulaye Sane to go through after the first leg ended in a 0-0 draw.
