Islamist publicist El-Awa to run for president Blasting critics of the 19 March referendum, one of Egypt's best known Islamic publicists announces he will contest the presidency
Mohamed Selim El-Awa, one of Egypt's most prominent Islamist publicists and writers, announced yesterday that he will run for the presidency this year. El-Awa made the announcement yesterday during a lecture in Rabaa El-Adawiya Mosque in Madinet Nasr, Cairo. El-Awa slammed critics of the 19 March referendum on constitutional amendments, insisting that no one could have fabricated the results and that the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces does not have the authority to conduct a repeat referendum. El-Awa also directed criticism towards Prime Minister Essam Sharaf and his deputy, Yehia El-Gamal, who have released media statements saying that they personally believe that the constitution should be drafted before the elections. El-Awa insisted that neither man has the right to issue personal opinions as long as they hold official posts.
