10 Egyptians injured in deadly Mecca stampede: Health ministry At least 717 people were killed and 863 were injured at a stampede during the hajj pilgrimage
Ten Egyptian pilgrims were injured on Thursday in a massive stampede in Saudi Arabia, the worst hajj disaster since 1990, Egypt's health minister said in a statement. At least 717 people were killed and 863 were injured in the incident, Saudi's civil defence service said on their Twitter account. A final toll is yet to be released, as are details of the nationalities of the dead and injured. Two of the injured Egyptians are in the intensive care. Pilgrims had converged on the site of Mena just outside Mecca on Thursday to throw pebbles at one of three walls representing Satan, the symbolic "stoning of the devil" that marks the last day of the hajj event. Almost two million pilgrims took part in the ritual. An estimated 62,000 Egyptians were performing the pilgrimage this year. One of the five major pillars of Islam, the hajj must be performed at least once in a lifetime by all Muslims who can afford the costly and difficult trip. On 11 September of this year, five Egyptians were killed when a massive construction crane crashed into Mecca's Grand Mosque during stormy weather. A total of 107 pilgrims of different nationalities died in the incident. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/143302.aspx
