Emad Abou-Ghazi, the minister of culture, says the ministry will officially call on Prime Minister Essam Sharaf to grant veteran filmmaker Mohamed Khan Egyptian nationality.
A campaign was recently launched by intellectuals and big-screen artists in an attempt to persuade the authorities to naturalize Khan.“I will submit a request to Premier Essam Sharaf upon his arrival from from South Africa,” Abou-Ghazi said.
‎“I asked some of the campaign's organizers to send the ministry a biography of Khan that includes all his movies and the [numerous]‎ awards he won in local and international festivals.”‎
A few years ago, the ministry of culture issued a book about the prestigious director.
‎ Khan, the son of an Egyptian mother and Pakistani father, was born in Egypt in 1942. He is considered to be one of the top filmmakers in the county.‎
The late seventies and eighties were the vital years of his career. He excelled in depicting the daily life of poor Egyptians.‎
The highly-acclaimed Khan, who spent most of his life in Egypt, directed 22 films, 12 of which were based on his own screenplays. Four of his movies were picked among the greatest 100 films in the history of Egyptian cinema.‎
