BREAKING NEWS: 19:03 local time: THE THREE ARTISTS MENTIONED IN THE STORY BELOW HAVE BEEN RELEASED, ACCORDING TO LAWYERS
Three artists were arrested around noon today as they were putting up posters near the journalists' syndicate downtown calling for people to attend tomorrow's "Second Day of Rage" protest in Tahrir Square.
The three are graffiti artist Ganzeer (Mohamed Fahmy), film director Aida El-Kashef and musician Adel Rahman Amin who goes by the name NadimX on Twitter.
Following a delay, they were taken by police jeep to the military police station in Mansheyet El-Bakry.
Several activists are heading there now to demand the release of the three as well as judicial oversight.
Yesterday, Ibrahim Abd, a member of the April 6 Youth Movement, was arrested in Nasr City while leafleting ahead of the Friday protest. He is currently being held by the Military Prosecutor.
This brings to four the number of activists who have so far been arrested for promoting tomorrow's protest, described by some as the “Second Revolution.” Among the demands of tomorrow's protest is an end to military trials for civilians and a reform of the media.
“Detaining activists while leafleting for protests is similar to what used to take place during Mubarak's era,” read a press statement issued by the April 6 Movement.
The arrests have triggered a huge response and outpouring of solidarity with the artists on the internet.
Among statements made is that of the Revolutionary Filmmakers movement. In their statement released on Facebook, they proclaim that: "The army's hand has reached several artists since the revolution, which makes a mockery of the slogan 'the army and the people is one hand.' The army has arrested and tortured director Tamer El-Said and artists Aly Sobhi and Ramy Essam.
"We didn't take any action [then] to ensure stability.
"We are against the detention of the three activists today, we ask the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces to release them immediately and provide assurances it will not do so again."
