Egypt's Olympic team eye glory in 2012 London Games qualifiers Coach Hany Ramzy regrets that a team like Egypt's has not qualified in 20 years and has high hopes as the date nears for training camp
Egypt Olympic team coach Hany Ramzy is confident about his team's chances to qualify for the 2012 London Games after a 20-year absence. “It is unacceptable that a big and experienced team, like Egypt, has not participated in the tournament for 20 years,” Ramzy was quoted as saying by Arabic CNN. The young Pharaohs last appearance in the Olympic Games was in 1999, Barcelona, but Egypt's former star player, Ramzy, is now eager to reach glory as a coach. “Leading Egypt to the finals is a dream for me, as a coach. I played with the national team in the 1990 World Cup, so I hope to also participate in the final London Games,” added the former Ahly star. Egypt qualified for the third round, last 16, in the 2012 London Games qualifiers with a 3-2 aggregate victory over Botswana. They will take on Sudan in the coming round on 4 and 18 June. “Taking on Sudan will not be easy, since they booted Gahana out in the first round – and they're a strong team. But we can do it,” Ramzy explained. The team will start preparations for the first leg against Sudan in Khartoum with a 10-day training camp starting 25 May. “We will have a friendly against Chad's first football team on 29 May and we will call in five new players from Egypt's youth team to add new blood to our squad,” the coach concluded.
