Egypt's newest addition to the political scene, Misr Al-Horreya (Freedom Egypt), is due to be officially announced in a press conference later this week. Misr Al-Horreya falls on the liberal side of the spectrum, calling for a free market economy and civil state while taking into consideration the social justice dimension. Amr Hamzawy, the party's founder, was first introduced to the Egyptian political scene as a political analyst and later became Research Director and Senior Associate at the Carnegie Middle East Center. His writings were critical of Mubarak's rule. Later, Hamzawy returned to Egypt and is now a political science professor at Cairo University. Hamzawy's move of forming a new political party comes one month after he quit the Social Democratic Party over the its statement condemning the use of violence against demonstrators in Tahrir Square on April 9th. Theofficial English translation of the party's name is yet to be announced. The press conference is set for Wednesday 18 May in the afternoon at a venue yet to be announced. It marks the establishment of Misr Al-Horreya political party, announcing its manifesto, programme and general advisory committee.
