Court set bail for ex-MP, Fathi Sorour, release Illicit Gains Authority court set bail for Fathi Sorour, giving him the option of being released from jail pending the conclusion of his corruption trial
The Illicit Gains Authority set bail early this morning for Ahmed Fathi Sorour, ex-parliament speaker and MP for the Sayeda Zeinab district at LE100 thousand (roughly $17,250). Sorour is in custody on charges of corruption and illegal profiteering. Sorour's lawyer pointed out that the documents the Authority was relying on as proof against Sorour were actually not in his name. Many Sayeda Zeinab families and former employees of Egypt's dissolved parliament showed up to support Sorour. Sorour is one of several Egyptian officials brought to court on charges of corruption after the popular revolution that ousted former president Mubarak and his regime that ruled for 30 years. He is also accused of taking part in ordering thugs to attack peaceful demonstrators in Tahrir Square on the infamous "Battle of the Camel" on 2 February.
