Cairo Choral Society performs Schubert Mass in G The Cairo Choral Society and the Cairo Festival Orchestra conducted by John Baboukis, will perform Schubert Mass in G on two consecutive days
Two performances of Schubert's Mass in G will take place in Cairo, the first on Tuesday 17 May at All Saints' Cathedral in Zamalekand the second on Wednesday 18 May at Ewart Hall of the American University in Cairo (Downtown Campus). Both evenings begin at 7 pm. The composition will be performed by the Cairo Choral Society and the Cairo Festival Orchestra conducted by John Baboukis with accompaniment by David Hales and concertmaster Mounir Nasr El-Din. Mass in G is known to be one of the shorter masses composed by Schubert. The composition saw daylight in 1815, after one week of composer's work."The Mass setting is restrained and conservative, reminiscent of Mozart or early Beethoven. It contains those portions of the Ordinary of the Mass that are most frequently set to music - Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Angus Dei - in the original Latin," writes Michaelene Gorney. The Cairo Choral Society was established in 1983 by Larry P. Catlin with the purpose of understanding great works through performance. The choir operates under the umbrella of AUC and its Performing and Visual Arts Department. The choir's past repertoire includes Brahm's Ein Deutches Requiem, Haydn's Nelson Mass, Faure's Requiem, Bach's Christmas Oratorio, Mozart's Coronation Mass, Schubert's Stabat Mater, as well as works by Britten, Williams, Beethoven, Rossini, Puccini, and many others. Most recently, in December 2010,the choir performed Handel's Messiah.
