Nigeria's hopes of defending their African Nations Cup title were dealt another blow when they slumped to a 1-0 loss at Sudan in Saturday's Group A qualifier. Babeker Bakri scored the winner four minutes before the break as Sudan claimed their first qualifying win after suffering two defeats. He powered a powerful header into the back of the net from a right-wing centre to send the home fans into ecstasy. Sudan leapfrogged Nigeria into third place, with the Super Eagles rooted to the bottom on just one point gained from a draw with South Africa and defeat by Congo. South Africa lead the group on seven points after beating Congo, who have six points, 2-0 earlier on Saturday.
