US delegation in Cairo ahead of Kerry visit
State Department delegation arrives in Cairo on Thursday as Kerry heads to Saudi Arabia for talks over a campaign to defeat Islamic State

A US delegation landed in Cairo on Thursday to lay the ground for an expected visit by US Secretary of State John Kerry as part of a Mideast tour to forge a coalition to crush militants controlling parts of Iraq and Syria, state news agency MENA reported.
John Kerry kicked off his trip to the Middle East on Tuesday to launch a diplomatic offensive aimed at building a coalition against the extremist Islamic State group. The senior diplomat on Wednesday headed toBaghdadfromJordan, the first stopon thetour which is expected to include other Arab capitals including Cairo.
Kerry was due in Jeddah in Saudi Arabiaon Thursday for talks with regional foreign ministers from Egypt, Turkey, Jordan and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which comprises Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar.
In a widely-anticipated speech, President Barack Obama said Wednesday he had authorised US air drones to strike for the first time in Syria, embroiled in a three-year civil war, with more attacks in Iraq in a broad escalation of an offensive against the Islamic State militant group.
Currently visiting Cairo as well is senior adviserDavid Thorne and another US State Department delegation headed by USState Department Counselor Thomas Shannon, MENA said.
