The Egyptian visual artist and experimental musician Hassan Khan will the head of jury of the 54thVenice Biennale. Jury members includeCarol Yinghua Lu, independent curator and art critic from China, Letizia Ragaglia from Italy, specialized in museology and contemporary art, Christine Macel, a French writer and art critic who has been the curator at Centre Pompidou since 2000, and John Waters, an American filmmaker, actor, writer, artist and art collector. The Venice Biennale is one of the oldest art biennales in the world and is widely known as the Oscars of the visual arts. The first participation of Egypt in the biennale came in 1938, with the works of the artist Mahmoud Saeed. The biennale then stopped because of World War II and resumed in 1948. In 1995, the Egyptian section in the biennale won the Golden Lion award for the works of the three artists: Medhat Shafik, Akram El Magdoub and Hamdy Atteya. This year the work of Egyptian martyred artist Ahmed Bassiouny, "30 days running around the place", will be displayed.
