Morsi supporters block traffic on Rabaa dispersal anniversary Hundreds of Mohamed Morsi supporters block several highways in Cairo and Giza early Thursday, marking the anniversary of the violent dispersal of the Rabaa Al-Adawiya sit-in
Hundreds of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi blocked several highways and roads in Cairo and Giza early Thursday on the first anniversary of the violent dispersal of the Rabaa Al-Adawiya and Nahda Square sit-ins. Tens of Morsi supporters cut the ring road in Al-Waraq area, Giza governorate, early Thursday on both sides of the highway using torched tires. According to news reports, security forces came and re-opened the vital road and the perpetrators fled the scene. In Cairo governorate, nearly 200 pro-Morsi demonstrators gathered at Halmia El-Zaitoun Square in East Cairo, blocking the traffic from both sides and chanting anti-police and anti-army slogans. In Nasr City, nearly 150 pro-Morsi demonstrators gathered near El-Salam Mosque and chanted against President El-Sisi. Morsi supporters also tried to block traffic in Mostafa El-Nahas area, but security forces dispersed their protest. On Twitter, pro-Morsi tweeps published photos and statuses on blocked traffic on the Cairo-Ismailia highway, as well as the entrance to Sixth of October City. In contrast, Siyad Osman, head of public relations in the Cairo Traffic Directorate, told Al-Ahram Arabic news website that all main squares in Cairo, Giza and Qaloubiya governorates were operating normally and traffic was smooth on all major highways. On 14 August 2013, security forces dispersed by force by pro-Morsi sit-ins at Rabaa and Nahda squares, where not less than 600 protesters, according to the Egypt's National Council for Human Rights, were killed. The bloody dispersal was followed by a wave of violence in22 Egyptian governorates, with attacks on police stations and churches that left 686 left dead, including 64 police officers. The Muslim Brotherhood-led National Alliance to Support Legitimacy (NASL) had called on loyalists to flock to major squares —specificially Tahrir, Rabaa Al-Adawiya and Nahda squares — Thursday to commemorate the violent dispersal one year ago. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/108415.aspx
