Preview: Egypt's Zamalek eye top spot in African Champions League Zamalek will be looking to build on their win over Hilal when they take on Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday
Zamalek will be eyeing Group A top spot when they visit DR Congo's TP Mazembe in the Champions League on Sunday. After Sudan's Hilal were held to a 1-1 home draw by Congo's Vita Club on Friday, the third-placed Zamalek have a chance to move to the top of the table with an away win in Lubumbashi. Mazembe, however, will be no pushovers on their home turf, with Zamalek - who beat Hilal 2-1 at home after opening their group with a 2-1 defeat at Vita Club - yet to claim a win at the DR Congo side. Mazembe, who are level on three points with Zamalek, are also not expected to give away the chance to beat their Egyptian rivals, who lost their last two meetings with the four-time African champions. Zamalek manager Mido insisted, however, that his side will go on the offensive to claim their second group win. "We will be attacking Mazembe at their home; we are there to win the game," Mido said in a TV interview. "The Mazembe clash could be the most important match in our African campaign; I believe it is the key for qualification for the next round. "We are not going to repeat the Vita Club defeat scenario." The 31-year-old boss, who took over at Zamalek last January, also bears in mind that a defeat at Mazembe could well undermine his chances of retaining his post. Widespread reports suggested that Mido had been at odds with Zamalek chairman Mortada Mansour before the ex-Tottenham frontman was quick to confirm that there are no hard feelings with the club chief. Last win Mido will have to do without center half Yasser Ibrahim, who sustained a hamstring tear that will rule him out for at least six weeks. Young forward Youssef 'Obama' Ibrahim, who scored several crucial goals in Zamalek's domestic league campaign, has also failed to make the trip due to injury. Versatile midfielder Omar Gaber is another major doubt for the game after injuring his shoulder during training as he is set to undergo scans to determine the extent of his injury. Zamalek's last win over Mazembe came in the Champions League semis in 2002 before they went on on to win their fifth title. Since then, the White Knights have failed to win an African trophy as they hope to end their 12-year wait for a continental title this season.
