Mido 'betting on' Zamalek's progress to Champions League final Mido is confident Zamalek will seal passage to the African Champions League final despite a disappointing 1-0 defeat by AS Vita Club in their opening group-stage game
Zamalek coach Mido is adamant his side will be among the last four in the African Champions League despite producing a lackluster display in a 2-1 defeat at Congo's AS Vita Club in their opening Group A clash. Vita Club exposed Zamalek's recurring defensive mistakes to beat the five-time African champions on Sunday. Zamalek, who had not conceded any goal in the preliminary rounds, fell behind after Firmin Mubel Ndome gave the hosts a half-time lead before attacking midfielder Moemen Zakareya leveled the score with a diving header with 14 minutes remaining. However, the Cairo giants failed to close down spaces at the back in the dying minutes as Emmanuel Ngudikama netted ten minutes from time to give his side an opening win. Sudan's Hilal beat Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo 1-0 in the other group match. "I'm betting on our qualification from this group and to the final after a lengthy absence," rookie coach Mido said on his Twitter feed on Wednesday. Zamalek have been struggling for consistency since fan favourite Mido took over at the club in January following the sacking of Helmi Toulan. They should beat Ittihad El-Shorta in their final Group B game of the Egyptian Premier League to qualify for the final four-team mini-league phase. Zamalek, who are chasing their first Champions League title since 2002, host Sudan's Hilal in their next game on Saturday.
