Egypt signed a €53.8 million concessional financing and grant agreement on Sunday with the French Development Agency (AFD) and the European Investment Bank (EIB) under the Green Sustainable Industries (GSI) Programme, aimed at supporting the country's industrial green transition. The deal, announced at a high-level event with private sector and industry representatives, also includes an €8.8 million EU-funded consultancy component managed by the EIB. Planning Minister Rania Al-Mashat said the programme reflects international confidence in Egypt's ability to shift towards sustainable industrial production. It targets industrial investments that reduce pollution, lower emissions, and improve energy and resource efficiency, boosting both environmental quality and the competitiveness of Egyptian products in global markets. The €53.8 million tranche is part of the programme's total €271 million package, comprising €30 million in EU grants, €135 million from the EIB, and €45 million from the AFD. Projects will focus on energy- and resource-intensive sectors such as iron and steel, cement, chemicals, food industries, and waste management. Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Manal Awad said the programme also seeks to enhance Egypt's export capacity by supporting compliance with international environmental standards, reducing production costs, localising clean technologies, fostering green industrial innovation, improving productivity, and creating new jobs.
