Man shot dead at protest in Damietta against mass death sentences Unidentified gunmen shoot dead a man during a protest on Monday against the mass death sentences handed out by judge in Minya
A man was shot dead by unidentified gunmen during a protest in Damietta on Monday, criminal investigation chief Al-Sayed Al-Ashmawy has said. The protest was against the mass death sentences handed out earlier in the day by a judge in Minya, Aswat Masriya reported. Minya criminal court on Monday issued its final verdict in the Matay police station case, confirming death sentences against 37 defendants and commuting 492 others to life imprisonment. The 529 defendants were initially sentenced to death on 24 March, the largest such verdict in Egyptian legal history. Also on Monday, the same judge sentenced 683 people to death, including leading members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Both cases involved the killing of a police officer. Aswat Masriya reported that security forces in Khayat village in Damietta had detained a group of Morsi supporters who are accused of inciting violence and being members of a terrorist organisation. The Court for Urgent Matters recently upheld the interim government's designation of the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/100106.aspx
