CAIRO: The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights today released a strongly worded statement condemning the excessive violence against demonstrators that left many injured. The statement urged police and security officers to exercise restraint when dealing with citizens and demonstrators, and demanded authorities adhere to international standards of human rights, including the right of free expression. The organization had been following developments with a number of detained activists. “The security forces dispersed the demonstrators with excessive force while protestors were attempting to organize a peaceful sit-in,” the statement read. “The recent developments are a serious danger to the January 25 Revolution,” the statement continued, urging both demonstrators and security forces to use restraint and follow the rule of law. The statement also demanded an immediate investigation by the Egyptian public prosecutor's office, and called for the prompt prosecution of those involved in any violations.
