CAIRO: Egyptian Minister of Transportation Ali al-Abdin Heikal today responded to workers' demands at the Egyptian Metro Company, announcing that current assistant company chief engineer Ali Hussein will take over from Mohamed Sheimy, who recently resigned. Heikal also said that Hussein must be approved and supported by the workers and he will be tasked with making the metro more efficient. The metro is considered the most important means of transportation in Egypt and it transports 2.5 million passengers daily. After acknowledging the demands of the workers, Heikal decided to appoint Hussein to the chief post. Sheimy's resignation was in part because of a job offer at a company belonging to the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum, the minister of transport added. Heikal claims that he went to the Al-Shohada metro station to hear the workers' demands. Sheimy told Youm7 that he could not relate to the strike and thus submitted his resignation of his own free will.
