CAIRO: Israeli troops detained Lina Atallah, an Egyptian reporter from independent newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm today. Atallah was one of the journalists covering the story onboard the humanitarian aid flotilla “Freedom Waves,” which departed from Turkey en route to the Gaza Strip. Atallah was stopped at the Israeli port Ashdod while she was on board the Canadian “Tahrir.” A twitter hashtag “#Lina” was created to follow the details of her detention. The flotilla includes Canadian and Irish boats. Atallah studied journalism at the American University in Cairo. Before joining the English edition of Al-Masry Al-Youm, she wrote for Reuters, Cairo Times, The Daily Star, the Christian Science Monitor and others. The Israeli navy boarded the flotilla ships and detained all 27 journalists and activists on board, the Jerusalem Post reported today. The activists will be handed over to the Israeli police and immigration authorities in Ashdod.
