CAIRO: The United States Embassy in Cairo today issued an emergency message to U.S. citizens in Egypt, warning of continued demonstrations. Sent by e-mail, the message said, “This emergency message is being issued to alert U.S. citizens to the potential for continued demonstrations in Egypt. Demonstrations in downtown Cairo on the night of October 9, 2011 turned violent and resulted in numerous deaths and hundreds of injuries.” The message said “during the current transition period demonstrations may occur frequently and without notice,” adding that “Whether or not these gatherings are confrontational, it is likely that the demonstrations and the police/military presence will cause significant traffic disruption.” The message also included suggestions for staying safe, including monitoring the news, avoiding large gatherings and avoiding areas with heavy police presence. It also added that labor strikes could affect flight schedules, as happened last week.
