CAIRO: The Egyptian Military Prosecution has received lawsuits against prominent Egyptian activists Asmaa Mahfouz, Noor Ayman Nour and Ahmed Azam. The three are to be investigated for insulting the armed forces, according to sources inside the Military Judiciary Authority. Adel el-Morsi, head of the Military Judiciary Authority, received lawsuits from military residents who live beside the authority's headquarters in Cairo's Nasr City neighborhood. The residents complained about the insults and abuse against the military by the three activists. The claimants say the incident happened during a protest outside the military prosecution last Tuesday, during the trial of imprisoned blogger Maikel Nabil. The residents submitted CDs with audio recordings of the voices of Mahfouz, Nour and Azam, the source added. Nour is the son of prominent politician Ayman Nour and public figure Gameela Ismail. The sources said the authority will take all the required procedures to investigate the cases and summon the accused activists. The source also said that Egypt's military judiciary respects freedom of opinion as long as others are not insulted. They also said that all cases investigated by the military prosecution are referred to the concerned Public Prosecution office in accordance with the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces' decision No. 2/2011 on crimes of thuggery and weapons possession, unless the case concerns the accusations against 11 civilians of trying to storm the headquarters of Ministry of Defense. Applying SCAF's decision, all accused people are referred to Supreme State Security courts, the sources added. They also said investigating the case of insulting the military is a basic right. Some Egyptian youth are facing military trials over attacking the military police forces after storming the Israeli Embassy in Egypt last month, while the embassy assailants were refereed to the Public Prosecution, the sources added.
