CAIRO – Egyptian Minister of Local Development Mohamed Atia today said that the Egyptian Cabinet had not yet decided to nullify Article Five of the parliamentary elections law. This announcement is in reaction to conflicting information about a Cabinet discussion regarding the article. Article Five mandates that any individual candidate running for a seat in the People's Assembly or Shura Council cannot be a member of any political party. In order to retain a seat in either legislative body the candidate must also not belong to or join a political party. According to the article, if any individual candidate joins a political party, his membership shall be withdrawn through a vote of two-thirds of the Council. Political parties today condemned this article, arguing that no political party member can run for any of these seats in the People's Assembly. The nullification of this Article will be discussed at the Cabinet's Legislative Committee prior to being considered at the Cabinet meeting, Atia said. Some newspapers and Nile News television channel reported that the Egyptian Cabinet would consider Article Five. Amending this article is one of the demands of those participating in today's Reclaiming the Revolution demonstration in Tahrir Square.
