CAIRO: A number of railway employees demonstrated outside the Ministry of Transport's headquarters today, accusing company officials and the railway company of stalling in response to their demands. Workers demanded the implementation of former transport minister Atef Abdel Hamid's decision that was issued in February in response to their demands. Company officials told Youm 7 that the company employs more than 3,700 workers who have access to all the rights and privileges of state employees. Most workers are working on temporary contracts demanding permanent contracts. Police demanded public transport workers striking at the Moneib bus station in south Giza to cease their strike and present their demands to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. The strikers refused to respond to the request of police, and pledged to continue the sit in until an official response is released. Youm 7 learned that Mona Mustafa, head of the Public Transport Authority in Cairo, met with a number of striking drivers at the authority's headquarters in Nasr City to discuss their demands as a prelude to ending the strike. Abdel Qawy Khalifa, Governor of Cairo has ignored the strikes, and was noticeably absent from governorate headquarters in Abdeen after cancelling all appointments in the governorate's Heliopolis branch, despite traffic problems caused by the strike.
