CAIRO: Hundreds of people today attended the funeral of Khaled Abdel Nasser, the son of late Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, who passed away yesterday at the age of 62. Chief of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, his vice-president Samy Anan and a number of officials from the ruling military council attended the funeral. Members of other political movements participated as well, and members of the Nasserite Party raised banners, which read, “The Heroes Struggle Together.” Khaled's brother Abdel-Hakin, remarking on Tantawi's presence, said, “He came because he is one of the sons of the country.” “Khaled struggled a lot for his country and the Nasserites are sad about his death,” said potential presidential candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi. Various other political and intellectual leaders attended the proceedings. Gamal Abdel Nasser was the second president of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and was one of the main figures in the Free Officers that led the 1952 Revolution.
