The United States Embassy in Egypt issued an emergency message to alert U.S. citizens of the potential for continued demonstrations in Cairo. The message, published on the embassy's website, called on all U.S. citizens to avoid crowds and areas with heavy police. The message reminded the citizens to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any large public gatherings and demonstrations. It also warned that even demonstrations or events intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. The statement added, "Whether or not these gatherings are confrontational, it is likely that the demonstrations and the police/military presence will cause significant traffic disruptions." The message mentioned that demonstrations may also occur in Alexandria and other Egyptian cities. It advised U.S. citizens residing in Egypt to monitor local news broadcasts for updated information about locations of demonstrations. The U.S. embassy said American citizens visiting Egypt should seek information from their hotels or tour guides in planning their daily activities. The message also provided contact numbers which U.S. citizens can use in case they needed the embassy's help. It added that the U.S. Embassy in Cairo remains open to the public for normal consular services even when demonstrations take place in neighborhoods near the Embassy. It said if the embassy needs to close unexpectedly due to a sudden change in security conditions, information will be posted on the Embassy website about rescheduling appointments for consular services. The messaged added, "You can also follow the Bureau of Consular Affairs on Twitter and on Facebook. Up-to-date information on security can also be obtained by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the United States and Canada, or, for callers outside of the United States and Canada, on a regular toll-line at 1-202-501-4444.
